socially as a teenager and the first technical form to channel my enthusi
asm was Contact Improvisation. After some modern dance training\, I perfor
med through the 90's for British contemporary dance companies.\nI maintain
an improvisational performance practice and have collaborated with many d
ancers\, actors\, musicians and designers to create improvised performance
.\nMy choreographic practice has followed and sometimes led the developmen
t of my teaching. I started teaching Contact Improvisation in 1996 and gra
dually expanded the scope of my pedagogy to include performance improvisat
ion\, solo dancing and ensemble composition. I still enjoy dancing in my 5
0's and my teaching is an extension of that enjoyment.\nI am a technically
minded teacher who eventually gives way to the inevitability of improvisa
 tion\n\nABOUT THE WORKSHOP:\nSaturday - Making Patterns\nAfter a somatic w
arm-up based in image led exploration\, we will be mixing improvisational
approaches with choreographed movement in order to articulate the soft ath
letics and multidirectional awareness of CI in solo movement patterns: for
 ward\, side and backward rolls\, dives\, knee slides\, handstands\, and fl
oor surfing.\nFrom a base of solo awareness we will learn partnering patte
rns that encourage spherical orientation and challenge us to tumble and ro
ll through space.\nBy integrating patterns into our free CI dancing we wil
l open space to fall\, fly and release as we dance together with risk\, hu
mour and vigorous physicality.\n\nSunday - Breaking Patterns\nMovement pat
terns and habits are essential for life and are part of what make us who w
e are as individuals\, but an over dependence on CI vocabulary can limit o
ur creativity. We will work on how to recognise our patterns\, how to appr
eciate what they do for us and how to find alternatives. By working with r
eversing\, redirecting\, interrupting\, pausing and focus shifting we will
stimulate dances of surprise\, play and individuality.\nThe goal is to cr
eate a space of open exploration where CI is a reference point for free im
 provisation\n\nCONTACT:\nYasin Hussain\nbristol.contactresearch@gmail.com\
