The Global Underscore is a simultaneous practice of the Underscore around the world. The Underscore NYC group has continued the tradition that dancer Claire Filmon began in 2000 of creating and coordinating a global Underscore at the summer solstice.

The Global Underscore practice is a slightly modified Underscore. A special “small dance” stand happens during the “skinesphere” phase, in which each site faces the next site on the path of Underscores happening around the world. A closing small dance stand, facing the other direction, concludes the Global Underscore.
If you have never been at an Underscore before, be there by 2pm to hear the explanation. Doors close at 2.15pm and you undertake to stay for the whole event.
Please note: there will be no class and jam at the usual time on this day

What is an Underscore?
The Underscore is a framework for practicing and researching dance improvisation that Nancy Stark Smith has been developing since 1990 based on her work with Contact Improvisation. It is a long jamming/CI/improvisation score that guides dancers through a series of “changing states”—from solo relaxation and sensitizing to gravity and support, through group circulation and interaction, to contact improvisation engagements, then opening out to full group improvisation, and back to rest and reflection.
