In order to comply with government social distancing guidelines we aim to run this as a non-contact dance improvisation event. If there are a lot of attendees we may need to split into separate pods as rules permit outdoor gatherings of up to 6 people from different households.

The Underscore is a framework for practicing and researching dance improvisation and Contact Improvisation developed in the 90’s by Nancy Stark Smith (one of the founders of Contact Improvisation). The Underscore is a score that guides dancers through a series of “changing states”; from solo deepening/releasing and sensitizing to gravity and support; through group circulation and interaction, Contact Improvisation (CI) engagements, opening out to full group improvisation with compositional awareness, and back to rest and reflection.

The GLOBAL UNDERSCORE (GUS) is a yearly event in which the Underscore is practiced simultaneously for a 4-hour period by people all over the world near the summer solstice (northern hemisphere).

Due to the passing of Nancy Stark Smith (NSS), the creator of the Underscore, on May 1, 2020, we dedicate GUS 2020 to her. We will honor Nancy by having 2 facings in the direction of her house in Florence, US.

Bristol community is going to aim to dance in Brandon Hill park from 3 pm through 7pm weather permitting. Please check COVID 19 guidelines and read the disclaimer included before attending.

The Modified Score-Jam (MSJ) has more of a jam format but is influenced by the Underscore. We will do one of the two Small Dances/Stands during the designated time and might do a Final Resolution, take some time for personal reflection, and have a circle of sharing at the end, depending on the weather changes.

Bristol MSJ will aim to be be 2–4 hours.
Maybe not everyone needs to have a talk-through.
A simplified talk-through will happen during the Assembly (opening gathering) at 3pm.

Disclaimer:

I recognise that there are risks to dancing CI. These include COVID 19 infection. I recognise that risk is inherent to life and needs to be balanced against the benefits of any activity. I recognise that it will not be possible to prove beyond reasonable doubt where an infection may have come from, regardless I hereby indemnify the organisers and teacher of this event against any adverse reaction to any possible infection howsoever arising.

I understand that the organiser and teacher are taking sensible precautions, such as holding the event outside, creating a touch-contact free zone, and emphasising a consent based culture. This does not mean there are no risks, just as in the rest of life all meaningful activity carries some risk. Being of sound mind and body I chose to exercise my freedom to partake in this class with the understanding that by doing so I am acting from my Mental Capacity.

I have been encouraged by the facilitator to weigh up the pros and cons associated with being in company with others at this time. I understand that if I contract the virus at some point during my daily activities there is a possibility others may unknowingly contract it from me. Therefore, I will act so as to reduce this possibility especially with those in vulnerable groups by taking sensible precautions. Prior to spending time in the company of vulnerable people I will likewise inform them of the risks associated with being in the company of others and seeking their informed consent where possible.

I undertake that I feel well, and while not a guarantee, affirm that I don’t have symptoms of a viral infection.
