Class Description
Jocasta now covering class as Malaika no longer able to. Class theme still brewing…
Playing with Energy
Starting from a place of meeting another person with a simple handshake and moving into ki wrestling, we will warm up by exploring principles of energy which can be used to extend awareness including: staying awake while falling, expanding our sense of space in the upside down world, and using playful but powerful resistance to move with our environment.
Malaika Sarco-Thomas is a researcher, teacher, performer and writer of improvisation practices in various contexts including theatres, contact improvisation jams and with living plants in outdoor locations. As a researcher she investigates principles introduced in the practice of Ki Aikido and in the work of improvisation artists including Kirstie Simson, Michael Schumacher, Charlie Morrissey, David Zambrano, Lucia Walker, Jess Curtis and Danny Lepkoff. Malaika is senior lecturer and award leader for the BA Honours Dance programme at University College Falmouth, and with Richard Sarco-Thomas organises weekly Wednesday contact jams at The Performance Centre, Tremough Campus, Cornwall. Together they coordinate the annual Contact Festival Dartington, a celebration and investigation of practices of contact and improvisation, taking place in 2013 from 23-30 March at The Performance Centre.
