It’s that time again to come together and experience a long facilitated and improvised Jam with Contact Improvisation Dance at its core. As it is bonfire night that night we will have a little (somatic) bonfire theme going on – details to be revealed at the time. PLEASE DO NOT BRING ANY EXPLOSIVES WITH YOU THO! 🙂
There will be live improvised music from Mark Langford playing bass clarinet and tenor sax.
Dancers, Improvisers, dance poets, performing artists will all find it an inspiring source of self discovery and creativity. All levels of moving experience welcome! If you want to improve your presence in the Jams or expand your dancing vocabulary – Underscore can support this fully.
In Nancy’s words:
“The Underscore is a vehicle for incorporating Contact Improvisation into a broader arena of improvisational dance practice; for developing greater ease dancing in spherical space—alone and with others; and for integrating kinesthetic and compositional concerns while improvising. It allows for a full spectrum of energetic and physical expressions, embodying a range of forms and changing states. Its practice is familiar yet unpredictable.”
The practice is usually 3-4 hours long. We are going to create 3 hours for this, including reflection time. To support your dance practice we will have a musician from 6:30 pm onwards.
WHAT YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED TO KNOW BEFORE COMING
If you are completely new to the practice (or need a refresher) please come at 5:00 pm for an approximately 30 minutes talk – through the score. I promise I try to make it as interesting as I can. This will take place in the lobby just outside the dance studio.
If you are seasoned Underscore practitioner or have sat for a talk though once in your life, please come for 5:30 pm at which point we will be transitioning from the lobby to the studio to begin with the Assembly.
NOTE: There won’t be an opportunity to join in at 6:30 pm- ususal time for the Jam in original class/jam format. This is because we are dancing a long focused score in its natural progression and we ask your commitment for those 3 hours.
If you know you are likely to get hungry please bring snacks with you. I will provide a big flask of tea.
