Class Description

Body Structures part 2.

Modulation of Tone – and Center Work.
From exploring the skeletal structure of the dancing body last week, in this class we move down to deeper layers of our muscular system and its web of connective tissue (fascia).
We will be invited to start by finding and connecting to the center – the sphere of initiation of all movement, using one simple and potent practice. From there we will articulate different ways of tone modulation in partner work. We’ll examine the muscles -‐ flexible hinges that travel across the bones, able to extend and contract, lengthen and shorten, reach and retreat. From the place of “muscle meditations” with the awareness of the all -‐ connecting center we will arrive in focused duet dance engagements and practice some center to center work.

The Jam

A jam is an informal gathering of dancers. There is no teacher, but space and time to develop skills and confidence. You are free to dance, rest, or sit and watch, as you wish. The jam provides an opportunity to explore and integrate techniques you have learned, and to find your own routes into dancing.

At some jams a teacher will facilitate a score to follow such as a focused (silent) jam, the Underscore (developed by Nancy Stark-Smith), or a blindfold (or eyes-closed) jam, this will normally be advertised via our regular mailout – so sign-up if you want advance notice.

  • Live musicians will improvise with the dancing at many of the jams.
